A British and Portuguese soldier shake hands in a field, 1917.
I recently talked about two nations who have persistently hated each other throughout history, but today I would like to talk about one of the great friendships in history between two nations, Great Britain and Portugal. The Anglo-Portuguese Alliance started all the way back in 1386 upon Ratification of the Treaty of Windsor, and since that date the two nations have never fought in a war with each other, or ever really had a conflict of interest in any military matter. Whether it was in the 1580s where Portuguese factions of the newly formed Iberian Union supported England over Spain during the Anglo-Spanish Wars, or in 1762 when The United Kingdom came to the help of their ally after Spain Invaded them during the Seven Years War, or in The Napoleonic Wars, when an isolated Portugal and Great Britain defied French incursions on the Iberian Peninsula as some of the last nations to stand up to the French Empire, or in 1916, when Portugal joined The Great War on the side of the allies to protect her interests in Africa against German raids, Portugal and Britain never failed to be there for each other throughout history. This treaty is still in effect today, the oldest of its kind in fact, even after 600+ years. Talk about commitment.
