Turning furniture over gives me the heebie jeebies; you never know what you might find festering under an old piece which has been in storage ... spider carcasses, those really creepy wafer-thin live spiders that would survive a nuclear holocaust, cobwebs, egg sacks .... brrr! So, imagine when I turned this fabulous blanket box over and found (wait for it!) ... N.O.T.H.I.N.G. Nothing but these fabulous pot castors, that is.
Let’s talk about castors.
1.The ones on this box are swivelling ceramic cups (not wheels) of deep joy - they are not original to the piece, but I’ve never seen ones like these before, and don’t care.
2.I got a message via eBay where my Modigliani piece is listed. The gentleman liked the idea but suggested I ditch the ugly castors. Ooh, I thought, that’s a bit rude. My response was that, where possible, I’m inclined to keep a piece of furniture’s original hardware, but that they could easily be removed/replaced to suit an interested buyer. Anyhoo, the upshot is I may get some work from the chap, and, frankly, I agree the castors ARE ugly.
3.I found the second image on Pinterest - a source of great inspiration to me. I absolutely love this little photo montage on the castor. If I come across an odd one, I’ll try something similar.
4.Which is the correct spelling, ‘castor’ or ‘caster’? And does it matter?
Back to the pine box. It’s been inherited, and really is a super piece; once refinished, it will provide perfect toy storage for a very busy little girl and her cousin, especially at this time of year. It will also complement, nicely, the fabulous green man buffet, which we refinished for the room earlier this year.
