This evening, on my way home from work, around up at a local thrift store that is run by the local humane society. Since my last visit, the store has been rearranged to allow space for 3 cages to house adoptable cats yes.
A gorgeous female tortoiseshell of approximately 4 years of age was the sole cat up for adoption. She was curled up on one of the shelves in a cage and my heart broke to see her so lonely. The only good news is, according to one of the volunteers, the cats who come to the thrift store are typically adopted within 7 days. If I could have, I would have brought her home in a heartbeat. However, my husband and I have agreed to get the catio up before bringing Kitty Two home.
After that and a speedy grocery errand, I scurried home as fast as legally possible to play with Dax before the sun went down. Pictured.
Hard to believe he was once in a similar cage waiting for love.
Hard to believe how many cats, and dogs, spend time in cages waiting for a home after being abandoned while there are waiting lists for purebred cats.
Heartbreaking to think of how much money people will spend on a purebred cat from a breeder without once looking at the shelter. Keeping Dax from ever having to experience life in a little metal cage has profoundly changed me.
Once I wanted a purebred. Once I thought it would be cool to attend a cat show. No longer. If you need a purebred for whatever reason, there are rescues specific to certain breeds. Female cats no longer able to breed may be retired and given to new homes. Same with male cats. What a terrible life, if you scrutinize it.
How would any of us feel being shuttled off to somebody else? To a stranger. To unfamiliar surroundings. Not because we have become difficult to handle. Not because we have become so sick we need specialized care. But because we have outlived our usefulness.
