"Rag Mama Rag" from The Band's second album was released as a single, reaching #16
in the UK, the highest of any single by the group. The single was less successful in the US, reaching only #57
on the Billboard Hot 100.
Musician Dr. John said that the song sounded "like a cross between Memphis and New Orleans." It has an improvised feel - AllMusic critic Thomas Ward viewed the lyrics as "almost nonsensical," and that unlike most Band songs, "Rag Mama Rag" owes its success "more to the music than the lyrics." Singing lead vocals, drummer Levon Helm plays mandolin while Richard Manuel moved to drums. Rick Danko plays the fiddle, producer John Simon plays tuba, and Garth Hudson plays the upright piano in a ragtime fashion.
